Mr. Kangas Bio
# Mr. Kangas: 6th Grade Math and Science Educator
Hello! I’m Mr. Kangas, and I have the privilege of teaching 6th grade math and science in our exceptional highly gifted magnet program. With a strong educational background, I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and a Master’s in Education from the University of Phoenix. My teaching journey began in 2007, and I have been a proud member of the Porter Middle School faculty since 2012.
As an educator, I am dedicated to fostering a love for learning in my students. My teaching philosophy revolves around engaging students in hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences that help them develop critical thinking skills and a passion for discovery. I find immense joy in exploring the wonders of math and science with my 6th graders, guiding them through complex concepts while nurturing their curiosity and creativity.
Outside of the classroom, I am a devoted father of four amazing children who inspire me every day. Together, we enjoy a variety of activities, including sports and martial arts, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle. When I’m not teaching or coaching students after school, you can often find me cheering from the sidelines at my kids' sporting events, exploring new destinations through travel, or enjoying a peaceful day out on a boat fishing.
In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am deeply involved in several extracurricular programs. I currently serve as the primary leader of the Students Run LA program (SRLA), where I have the honor of training 7th and 8th-grade students over the course of eight months to prepare for the LA Marathon. This program not only promotes physical fitness but also instills perseverance, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment in the students who participate.
I am also passionate about environmental education and sustainability. As the overseer of our student-led Eco-Club, I work closely with students to implement various projects aimed at promoting eco-friendly practices within our school. I am proud to serve as the Climate Literacy Champion for Porter Middle School, where we have successfully developed programs such as recycling initiatives and composting efforts. Engaging students in these projects helps them understand the importance of environmental stewardship, fostering a generation that values and protects our planet.
Through my years of teaching, coaching, and community involvement, I strive to create a supportive and inspiring environment for my students. I believe that education extends beyond the classroom, and I am committed to empowering my students to become not only academic achievers but also responsible and active citizens. I am excited to continue this journey with my students and contribute positively to their growth and development both inside and outside the classroom. Thank you for taking the time to learn about my background and passions!
